The present government has been allotted taka 45 crores for the first phase in order to construct a multistory building for 250-bed Meherpur General Hospital. But the project is going to close before come to light as the sitting Civil Surgeon Dr. G K M Shamsuzzaman sent an objection letter vide memo no. CS/Meher/2017/1028/1(12) dated 3 July, 2017 duly addressed to the Secretary, Health Service Division, Health and Family Welfare Ministry with copy to other concerned departments. As a result all the activities including blue print of the proposed building halted. The people of the area became resented at this.

According to written objection letter, the Civil Surgeon told that his office  would face problem in normal works and lose its elegance. He wrote his objection with giving no reference of any experts in this respect.

When the matter was taken to the notice of the President, Meherpur Hospital Managing Committee Forhad Hossain, MP by the observer correspondent told that the objection letter is a preconditioned for Meherpur. He more opined that the Meherpur dwellers are deprived of proper medical treatment for different reasons that is why there is no alternative but to construct a high rising hospital building for 250-bed. He expressed his dissatisfaction for sending such letter to higher authority without consultation with him. As there is proposal to establish a medical college here, so this place adjacent to existing hospital is better and if needed the office of the civil surgeon will shift elsewhere, he added saying that the matter is important for the public interest. Besides, it is a part of development of Meherpur, he opined.

President, Meherpur District Development Forum, Rafiqul Alam and Ruhul Quddus Tito, former president of Meherpur Press Club including many sentient people said that the existing 100-bed hospital turned into 250-bed general hospital in black and white only with no facilities. The hospital is running with the facilities of 100-bed hospital although there is no sufficient physicians according to sanctioned strength. The number of doctors and manpower will be increased if the 250-bed hospital building is constructed at the same time the deserving patients will get service as per their expectation. They expressed their dissatisfaction saying the objection letter created by the civil surgeon is inhuman and awful. Thy demanded immediate withdrawal of the letter for the interest of the neglected district Meherpur.

Muktar Hossain Dewan, Executive Engineer of Public Works Department said that all the activities including drawing of blueprint of the proposed hospital building halted following an objection letter raised by the civil surgeon. He said too, that there is no sufficient place to construct the building in the hospital boundary expect in front of the civil surgeon office. It could be possible to construct building there.

It could not be possible to contact with Dr. G K M Shamsuzzaman as he was not at station. He used most of the time to  remain out of station showing different pleas. When contacted with the acting Civil Surgeon Dr. Mizanur Rahman said that he was holding the charge of the Civil Surgeon for few days only. It is the  responsibility of the designated civil surgeon to take decision. So far I know the objection letter will be withdrawn soon, he added.
