Pouro Election Tomorrow (25 April)
Meherpur Pouro poll is scheduled to be held tomorrow (25 April) after
many speculation and imagination. The candidates are found passing busy times and
moving from door to doors of the voters to win them. They have expressed their
satisfaction over the present poll situation at the same time they expected
such acceptable situation on the polling date.
After
many speculation and imagination the election of Meherpur Pourosova is going to
hold on 25 April. All the areas of the municipality have been covered by posters
of the candidates. Peoples are found gossiping in the tea stalls, markets, bus
stand, offices regarding much cherished
pouro poll. The candidates of Mayoral posts including the councilors are found
moving door to doors to win the minds of the voters giving different
commitments of development. The voters told that they would cast their votes for the honest, sincere,
free from corruption and fit candidates. All the candidates expressed their
satisfaction seeing the present environment of the election at the same time
the BNP backed candidate and the independent candidates expressed their
grumblings for the polling date.
The
pourosova was established in the year 1869 by the British and it was upgraded
as first class pourosova in 2001. Four candidates for the post of Mayor are
vying. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton is the Awami League nominated candidate in vote
race with boat symbol while BNP backed candidate Jahangir Biswas with paddy
sheaf, independent candidates sitting mayor for 24 years is on the race taking
symbol coconut tree and Nisan Saber with
mobile phone.
Apart
from this some 58 candidates for the general councilor posts while 15 women
candidates are contesting for reserved woman seats. Total voters are 30
thousands 965 in which 15 thousands 233 are male and 15,732 are female voters.
Rafiqul
Alam, President, Meherpur District Development Forum who is the member of
election monitoring team informed that he did not find any major violations of
election code of conduct. Some minor violations were found that mitigated after
exchanging views with the mayoral candidates in the office of District Election
Officer a few days back.
Rokonuzzaman,
Returning Officer also the District Election Officer told to The Independent that in the mean time all arrangements have
been completed in order to hold a fair pouro election. He sought all kinds of
cooperation from the voters and the candidates to present an acceptable poll to
all.
It
may be mentioned there that it was supposed to hold the election in 2004 but
due to litigation with the apex court in connection with periphery it held in 2011 after 12 years.
Later, it was again suspended in
December, 2015 and 2017 for the same causes.
