Drug smugglers desperate in Meherpur frontier


Drug smugglers of Meherpur frontiers  become desperate in  smuggling drugs. Everyday they are bringing in  wine, hemp, heroin and phensedyl from India illegally  and send to different destinations including the capital city through different transports. Law enforcing agencies, every now and then, can seize some little parts of big deals of smuggled drugs, locals opined.
Local administrations claimed that their role is strong against the drug smugglers. Some 28 drug takers were held by police during last two months. They were punished through mobile court and no branded drug traders was held during the time that is why the people of the areas expressed their dissatisfaction. 
There are five Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and three police camps located at Dhola, Rongmohol, Kazipur, Sohratola, Tentulbaria, Peertola and Bamundi areas undger Gangni upazila frontier. It was established in order to curb the terrorism and to stop the smuggling, but no effective results are reported, locals opined. Besides, there are district anti smuggling task force committee and narcotics control department. But no activities is found for controlling drug smuggling. Here can say, Meherpur district is floating on drugs especially Gangni upazila. 
Some youths of village Harabhanga undger Gangni Upazila of the district alleged that many youths used to come from Kushtia, Chuadanga and Meherpur to frontier villages like Kazipur, Rongmohol, Khashmohol, Peertola, Dhola  in order to take drugs. Besides, the drug traffickers used to smuggle different drugs by using motor cycles and microbuses. No strong role of   BGB men  is found rather they realize bribe from the smugglers, local people said. Police to some extent taking effective step against the drug takers and smugglers in addition to their multifarious duties.
Moving around  the bordering areas,  came to know from some reliable   and police sources some names of branded drug smugglers/traders. They are known to all. They used to smuggle drug into Bangladesh from Indian Dhara and Tajpur area of West Bengal  through one  Babu of Dharmadah under Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia district and send to different destinations including Dhaka by different transports. Off and on, some small deals are netted. It goes without saying that they are not traders rather hired carriers. 
Akram Hossain, Officer-in-charge of Gangni police station said that some 28 drug takers were held by police and punished through mobile court. Meanwhile some hemp and phensidyl seized and police working hard to hold the original drug traders. Due to their  strong stand against the drug traders, a constable was stabbed to death by the smugglers a few days back. Following the incident the drug smugglers of the areas went into hiding.
Hamidul Alam, Police Super who is a pain for the drug traders and takers said that Meherpur police were working against the drug traders relentlessly. As a result drug smuggling has reduced to some extent.  If the other agencies would discharge their duties properly regarding drug, the district dwellers could get better result. Due to strong role of the police against the drug smugglers, recently a cop faced death. Police has no involvement with the drug traders, he vehemently added.
Commanding Officer Col. Abul Kalam Azad of BGB 47 Battalion of Mirpur Sector under Kushtia district to the journalists that the members of BGB working in the borders to ensure the security of the people of bordering villages and to resist the smugglers. On getting information, they used to  search houses and take the lawful action. In reply to a query, he said, BGB does not realize any benefit from the dens of drug and smugglers.
